Kate Kane has addressed a touching letter to her husband ahead of the Euro 2020 final on Sunday.
Recalling her initial, mocking reaction to the England star’s declaration that he would captain his country one day, she has shared her pride at him having achieved his goals and praised him for being “such an amazing husband and dad”.
Due to strict Covid regulations, the pair have been unable to see each other throughout the tournament, but are hopeful that when they reunite, England will be champions of Europe.
“H, you know I am not one to cry too easily but I found myself in tears when I started writing down how proud you’re making us all and what you’re doing for the country,” she said on Instagram.
“I used to laugh at you when we started going out and you’d be round at mine playing penalties with my brother Tom and Seamus the dog, and you’d say you would be England captain one day.
“But that’s you – you set yourself a goal and you achieve it and you always said you were going to the Euros to get to the final.
“You’re such an amazing husband and dad and the children can’t wait to have you home. Imagine telling them all about this summer one day when they’re a bit older. We all love you so much, Skipper.
“Bring it home for the country, you deserve to lift that trophy with this incredible England team!”
Kane, who could write himself into the history books on Sunday, credits his wife for keeping him grounded.
“If I score a hat-trick, Kate will say, ‘Well done, you can make me a cup of tea when you get home’,” he revealed.
“She’s not afraid to take the mickey out of herself or me.
“She’s been there through all the ups and the downs. She’s been with me when I’ve been successful; she’s been with me when I’ve been struggling or had injuries.
“When I feel bad about something, or when I need to get something off my chest, I can just turn to her and talk about anything.”
