David De Gea has reported for Manchester United pre-season training two weeks ahead of schedule as he shows his determination to regain the number one jersey.

De Gea was part of Spain’s Euro 2020 squad as they lost in the semi-finals to eventual winners Italy.

The 30-year-old was second choice for La Roja during the tournament and didn’t play a single minute for Luis Enrique’s side.

Seven players to move for £20m-plus with only EFL experience

The Spaniard lost his place in the United team last season after being granted a month’s leave by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer so he could be with his wife for the birth of their child.

The ex-Atletico Madrid man is competing with Dean Henderson for the number one spot, and it is still up for grabs despite Henderson featuring consistently in the league following De Gea’s absence.

Speaking to The Times last month, former United boss Jose Mourinho claimed that Henderson is now “ready” to make the number one spot his own.

“I think they are good goalkeepers. I don’t think they are phenomenal goalkeepers or, in Dean Henderson’s case, not yet phenomenal,” Mourinho said.

“When I say not yet, I say he will be. I met him at [Manchester] United when he was a kid and I always remember him asking me to go on loan. He was saying when I come back, I come back to be the No 1.

“He told me that when he was the fourth choice. He is a kid with an incredible self confidence and I think he is ready.”

Former England goalkeeper David James was also high in praise for the 24-year-old, saying in May: “In my opinion, if he can be Manchester United’s number one then there’s no reason why he can’t be England’s number one.

“It’s the way he handles himself. I’d say ‘fearless’ would be the best word. If there’s a mis-judgement or error, he’ll continue doing what he knows he can do afterwards and not be frightened of it.”

Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, he was replaced in England’s Euro 2020 squad by Aaron Ramsdale due to injury.

The FA said in a statement: “Henderson withdraws with a hip issue that would continue to limit his involvement in training throughout the tournament.”
