Aston Villa are in advanced talks over signing Emi Buendia’s former teammate at Norwich City, Todd Cantwell.

What’s the story?

Having sealed the first-team signings of Buendia and Ashley Young, Dean Smith’s side look intent on further strengthening the squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign next month.

Should Villa sign Cantwell?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

And, according to Football Insider, the Midlands club are in negotiations with the Canaries over signing Cantwell and that talks are progressing well, while “there is growing confidence a deal can be done”.

Dean Smith will be buzzing

Described as someone with a “God-given” talent by his former youth team coach Gary Cockaday, the 23-year-old helped lead Norwich’s chargeback to the Premier League last season, netting six goals and setting up another seven in the Championship.

Cantwell’s directness and willingness to take players on saw him average an impressive 1.6 dribbles per game in the Championship last season, which actually ranked him joint-top for the Canaries alongside Buendia.

Crucially, given his previous comments on what he wants in his new signings this summer, there will be no doubt Smith will be buzzing with this latest update.

The Villa boss said: “In terms of our recruitment, we talk about the sweet spots that we’re looking for, which is that the players have Premier League experience and are (ideally) British because there is no adaptation risk at all.”

Having played in the top-flight before with the Canaries, and being only 23 and English, the £25k-a-week earning Cantwell fits that bill to an absolute tee, and with Buendia already on board, would already have a familiar face at the club.

So not only would his talents on the pitch be something that will excite Smith, but his profile is exactly what the Villa boss is looking for as well.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has revealed a new Aston Villa transfer target…
