An update has emerged regarding Celtic’s interest in Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster.

What’s the talk?

According to Sky Sports, the Hoops have an interest in signing the Hornets veteran this summer as Ange Postecoglou looks to revamp his goalkeeping options.

The report claims that Foster is being monitored alongside Tottenham’s Joe Hart, although it remains to be seen whether they would be keen to bring both of them in or just one.

Fans would be livid

Celtic fans could well be fuming if the club decided that the answer to their goalkeeping woes was to sign a 38-year-old who lost his place in Watford’s team last season.

Foster, who has recently risen to social media fame with his YouTube channel The Cycling GK, has played just two competitive games in 2021 for Watford, losing his place to Daniel Bachmann. This begs the question; why would a player who was a backup in the Championship solve Celtic’s issues between the sticks?

If Celtic made this move four or five years ago, it would be a completely different story. From the start of the 2016/17 campaign to the end of 2019/20, Foster missed one Premier League match for West Brom and Watford.

However, he’s now 38 and would at best be a short-term solution for Postecoglou, but the issue is that there is no proof that he would be an upgrade in the short-term as he has played very little football this calendar year.

Speaking on his podcast recently, Foster opened up on the time he played against the Hoops for Manchester United at the start of his career. He said: “The atmosphere at Celtic Park, I have got to say, was the best atmosphere I have ever played at, ever. It got in my head like you would not believe.

“The noise was like nothing I have ever heard before, when they are attacking (Celtic) their fans suck the ball into the goal.”

This indicates that the £33k-per-week veteran thinks highly of the club and therefore could be interested in the switch.

However, Celtic should not be on for it and must avoid a howler by looking elsewhere in the market for reinforcements, whether that be Hart or another shot-stopper. Hoops fans would be fuming if the club copped out of getting a quality young goalkeeper to sign an ageing stop-gap, as it would show a lack of ambition from the Parkhead outfit.
