Newly-promoted Watford are rivalling Burnley for the signing of Josh Doig from Hibernian, according to reports.
Doig is an exciting 19-year-old left-back who has been dubbed as ‘Kieran Tierney 2.0’.
He helped Hibernian to finish third in the Scottish Premiership last term with one goal and four assists in 24 matches.
Doig appeared in Hibs’ Europa Conference League qualifying win over FC Santa Coloma on Thursday.
However, he was left out of the squad for the league opener against Motherwell as a move nears completion.
When asked about Doig’s future earlier on Sunday, Hibs boss Jack Ross said: “He’s been the subject of a lot of attention and much more concrete interest over the last few days.
“For us and for Josh it needs to reach a head one way or the other.
“I’d like to keep him, but it looks more likely he’ll leave the club fairly soon. There’s still a number of suitors.”
According to the Daily Mail, Watford opened the bidding in June with a £2.5million offer, which was swiftly knocked back.
Hibs are holding out for £4m and that fee could soon be matched by Burnley.
The report states that Sean Dyche’s side have emerged as ‘strong challengers’ for Doig’s services.
The Clarets are searching for a new left-back to challenge Erik Pieters and Charlie Taylor in the squad.
But Doig could end up playing in the Championship football during the 2021/22 campaign.
It’s believed that Nottingham Forest are plotting a season-long loan move.
They’re waiting for Doig’s long-term future to be sorted before making an official approach to either Watford or Burnley.
Such a transfer would improve Forest’s defensive options, while also giving Doig the chance to gain first-team experience.
The full-back started his career at Hearts but was snapped up by Hibernian two years ago.
He’s made 37 appearances for the club since then and bagged his one and only goal against Hamilton.
Doig isn’t the only player Burnley and Watford are battling for.
They’re joined by Crystal Palace in the hunt for Ademola Lookman of RB Leipzig.
The talented Englishman spent last season on loan at Fulham, where he registered eight goal contributions in 34 Prem matches.
