Tottenham Hotspur have had a £43m bid for Cristian Romero accepted by Atalanta, according to reports.
Just yesterday, it was claimed that talks had broken down between the two clubs but talkSPORT have now revealed that the deal is back on for the Argentine, who was named Serie A’s best defender last season.
Tottenham are eyeing a replacement for Toby Alderweireld, who joined Al-Duhail earlier this week, and Romero, fresh from victory at the Copa America this summer, is their primary target.
The 23-year-old made 31 league appearances for Atalanta last season as they finished third and qualified for the Champions League.
On the Spurs rumours, Nerazzurri boss Gian Piero Gasperini said recently: “I haven’t actually seen Romero yet, as he’ll be back on Monday.
“We’ll see what his position is, then of course there is a negotiation in progress between the two clubs. We’ll see what the evaluations will be if he does leave.”
Elsewhere at Tottenham, 17-year-old Alfie Devine has been handed his first professional contract.
Devine became Spurs’ youngest-ever player and goalscorer in January when he netted against Marine in the FA Cup and has been rewarded with a new deal.
The club said on the official website: “We are delighted to announce that Alfie Devine has signed his first professional contract with the Club.
“The young midfielder, who celebrates his 17th birthday today, has signed a contract that will run until 2024.
“Alfie joined the Academy from Wigan in the summer of 2020 and made his first team debut in our FA Cup win over Marine in January 2021, coming off the bench to become the Club’s youngest-ever player and goalscorer.”
Spurs have also managed to tie Son Heung-min down to a new contract, with the winger committing to a four-year extension.
Kevin Phillips described it as Spurs’ “best deal of the summer”.
“You would have to say credit to the player, he loves it at Tottenham,” he told Football Insider.
“You can see that smile whenever he plays and the fans love him as well. He obviously feels comfortable. Maybe he feels with the new manager he’s excited.
“Nuno [Espirito Santo] has obviously said something to convince him of a new contract. Keeping Son is a huge coup and their best deal of the summer.”
