Nuno Santo is just over a week away from leading out Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League for the very first time.
Much of their hopes will be pinned on Harry Kane – should he stay – and Heung-min Son as Spurs look to bounce back from a frustrating two years.
The attacking duo contributed 40 goals and 24 assists in the Premier League, a stark return considering the overall squad only found the net 68 times across 38 matches.
They will be expected to repeat such a feat if Spurs are to stand a chance at redemption.
However, one name has looked impressive under the Portuguese head coach and as a result, could be given a new lease of life at the club…
Does Bergwijn start against City next week?
On the Chalkboard
Steven Bergwijn has struggled for much of his Spurs career so far.
The 23-year-old dynamo set the ground running with a stunning goal on debut against Manchester City back in February 2020 but similar performances were far and few between.
During the 2020/21 campaign, the Dutch winger found the net just once and before Jose Mourinho’s sacking, he failed to even make the matchday squad in seven of his final nine matches, as per Transfermarkt.
As is often the case, Bergwijn has since been linked with a move away from North London, with Eredivisie giants Ajax keen on his signature, according to reports in his home country.
However, he has featured in all three of Spurs’ pre-season friendlies and has looked the part.
Two of those matches were against League Two opposition and that has to be factored in, even if they were fitness exercises. He capped off his change in fortunes with a goal on Wednesday evening, however, against Champions League winners Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The departure of Erik Lamela has also bolstered his chances of being a success and with all eyes on Kane and Son, he could well emerge as Nuno’s secret weapon, even if it’s from the bench.
Despite being lauded as “incredible” by Mourinho, the £34m-rated Dutch international really struggled to make his mark under the former Spurs boss but now it could well be his time to shine on that right flank.
Only time will tell.
