Ex-Man United star outlines what club need to do to ‘really challenge’ Man City & Chelsea

Man United’s fall from grace

Sir Alex Ferguson built a dynasty at Manchester United, the Red Devils dominated the Premier League from its inception in 1992 all the way up to 2013 – winning the league in Ferguson’s final season in charge.

Since the Scotsman departed though, United have failed to win the league once with Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester instead taking the crown.

What makes it worse for Man United, however, is that they haven’t even really came close to mounting a proper title challenge since Ferguson left.

Jose Mourinho guided United to their highest points total post-SAF in 2017/18, notching 81. But even that didn’t see them come close to the eventual winners Man City, who become the first and only centurions that campaign.

What Man United need to challenge for the league

United again finished 2nd in 2020/21, but they still were a full 12 points off Manchester City.

The help bridge that gap, the Manchester outfit have signed both Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane this summer.

Both are top-quality players that address weak points in United’s team at present.

But former Manchester United midfielder Roy Kean is still currently of the opinion that said signings will not be enough to really challenge Chelsea and Manchester United.

Instead, the Irishman believes United still need one or two more players:

“Two very good signings, particularly Varane with his experience with the problem at the back.

“Sancho, a young talented player who did well in Germany.

“I still think what City have done and Chelsea with Lukaku, United still need one or two into the group to really challenge.”
