Newcastle United could sign a dream midfield partner for Joe Willock in Marseille starlet Boubacar Kamara.

What’s the story?

With reports in recent days claiming that Steve Bruce’s side have agreed a fee with Arsenal to sign Willock on a permanent basis this summer, the Magpies would be wise to turn their attentions towards more arrivals.

Is Willock worth the money?

And, according to French publication L’Equipe (via Pressreader), the Tyneside club have had a bid turned down for Marseille’s Kamara, with the Ligue side more interested in letting him join Sevilla.

Imagine him and Willock

While he’s tremendously versatile, Kamara could be used by Bruce as the midfield anchor man alongside Willock, and it’s safe to say he’s earned rave reviews for his ability and potential, with his former Marseille teammate Rolando waxing lyrical about him.

He said: “This kid is a phenomenon. When he started training with us, he was 15 years old. And from day one, I said, no, but this little one is going to be a great player.

“He’s the kind of central defender I like. He is full of qualities and, above all, he works, he listens. It is out of the ordinary.”

The defensive instincts he will have picked up from being a centre-back could bode well for being a holding midfielder at St James’ Park, and his stats last season appear to point in that direction too.

As per Whoscored, he averaged a whopping 2.5 tackles per game in Ligue 1 last season, but also boasted one dribble per match and averaged 58 passes per game at an accuracy of 86.7% – to put that into context, nobody in the Newcastle squad managed more tackles, and nobody made more passes.

The £12.7m-rated dynamo has got all the tools in his locker to be the perfect compliment for Willock in the engine room, with the Frenchman’s defensive instincts dove-tailing well with the Arsenal man’s eye for a goal.

It would be the kind of dream midfield duo that the Magpies could really do with this season in the Premier League.
