Concerning stats paint the picture as Ben White targeted on back of shaky Arsenal debut

Viewers of this evening’s meeting between Arsenal and Brentford have taken to social media in numbers, to react to the debut display of Gunners stopper Ben White.

Bees triumphant

Mikel Arteta’s men were of course back in action a short time ago.

The capital outfit made the trip across London, for a derby meeting with Premier League newcomers Brentford.

Arsenal, despite the absence of the likes of Thomas Partey, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, were viewed as favourites ahead of kick-off, with tonight’s clash at the Brentford Community Stadium having marked the hosts’ first ever in the Premier League.

When all was said and done on Friday, however, the season’s first shock was forthcoming on its first day.

A dismal display on the part of the visitors eventually saw Thomas Frank’s Brentford emerge on the right side of a deserved 2-0 scoreline.

Sergi Canos opened the game’s scoring inside 25 minutes, cutting inside from the left before rifling a low effort through the legs of Calum Chambers and beyond Bernd Leno:

Then, a little over fifteen minutes from time, the Bees faithful were sent into delirium, when Ivan Toney’s front post flick-on was nodded home by Christian Norgaard to clinch a famous result, and a winning return to the top-flight of English football for Brentford:

White slammed

At Arsenal, though, the inquest now begins.

The Gunners looked characteristically lacking in ideas in the final third this evening, a problem which of course plagued the club throughout the 2020/21 campaign.

Perhaps even more concerning, however, were ongoings at the other end.

Mikel Arteta’s men looked beyond shaky at the back, with big-money summer addition Ben White having majorly struggled in his efforts to deal with Brentford star man Toney:

Viewers of proceedings in London, in turn, have since taken to social media in numbers, to take aim at Arsenal’s new £50 million man:
