Paul Scholes says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer “has to win something” with Manchester United this season, claiming the quality of managers is “the difference” between the top Premier League teams.

The United boss is yet to win a trophy at Old Trafford but has now built a squad capable of challenging for the top prizes.

But his side suffered an embarrassing defeat to Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday, leading many – including Scholes – to criticise Solskjaer’s tactics.

The Swiss side utterly dominated the second half following Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s sending off and grabbed a last gasp winner, handed to them on a plate by substitute Jesse Lingard.

And Scholes says the loss reminded him of the defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir in last season’s group phase.

He told BT Sport: “It’s Basaksheir all over again. We were here last season and rueing mistakes.

“That’s a big mistake at the end of the game from Jesse who done really well at the weekend. Just goes to show wherever you go in Europe it’s tough.

“You have to be on your game. You have to be mentally tuned in. Yeah, they started well and a decision in the game can change it. It was a bad touch, a bad tackle then the game turned on its head totally.”

Solskjaer has come under fire for his negative tactics having gone down to ten men, with many comparing the situation to that of Chelsea when they held Liverpool after a sending off before the international break.

Rio Ferdinand rejected that comparison but Scholes insists his former United teammate “has to win something” this season with the squad at his disposal.

“That’s what you expect from Man United [to sign the best players], it’s been a quiet time over the last few years,” he added.

“Ole has now built a squad that is capable of winning the big prizes and that’s what he has been brought to do.

“The only difference is the quality of the managers, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool have proven winners.

“You’ve got Ole who has done a fantastic job building this squad, now is the time with that squad of players. He has to win something.”
