Tottenham Hotspur could receive a timely injury boost ahead of this weekend’s London derby with Chelsea…
What’s the latest?
Nuno Santo has been without his top goalscorer Heung-min Son since their return from the international break as the South Korean picked up a calf problem ahead of his nation’s World Cup qualifier against Lebanon.
The 29-year-old attacker missed Spurs’ defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday and his absence was sorely felt as they were well beaten 3-0 at Selhurst Park.
If fit, should Son start vs Chelsea?
However, according to the Evening Standard’s ever-reliable Spurs reporter Dan Kilpatrick, there is a confidence that he will be fit for this weekend’s big encounter.
“The club will be assessing day by day. (From what I hear, more optimism today that he could make Chelsea game),” he tweeted.
A big boost
If Son is fit in time for Sunday’s clash, then it’ll give Nuno and his squad a massive boost after last weekend’s disappointing result.
The £76.5m-rated dynamo is a major influence towards Spurs’ success so far this campaign, having scored more goals (two) than anyone else, whilst he also tops the charts for shots per game (3.3) and isn’t far behind for creating chances either, averaging one key pass per outing, as per WhoScored.
This has merely been him continuing on from his fine form last season, which saw him record 17 goals and ten assists (nearly 40% of their entire total), a feat bettered only by Harry Kane.
Against the Eagles, Spurs managed only two shots all game, one of which was on target. They also failed to create a single big chance. By comparison, Patrick Vieira’s side, who were winless before the match, managed to record a total of 18 shots and three key chances, via SofaScore.
It’s no coincidence that Nuno’s men suffered in the absence of Son, so it’s imperative that he is fit and available for a fixture as big as the one this weekend.
As Kilpatrick says, there is optimism that he will be fit enough to start on Sunday, and that should leave the Hotspur faithful and the Portuguese boss absolutely buzzing.
Spurs are a much greater threat with Son starting and the prospects of him being available are now seemingly increasing.
