In today’s Fact or Fiction national columnist Mike Farrell looks at three big recent topics in college football and decides whether each statement is indeed FACT or if it’s FICTION.
1. LSU is a top five job in college football.
Farrell’s Take: FACT. Some don’t think so because LSU plays in the SEC West and there’s that Alabama problem but, trust me, LSU is a top-five job in the sport. The home recruiting advantage is the best in college football, the fan base is amazing and the atmosphere is unmatched especially during night games.
Les Miles and Ed Orgeron are not the greatest coaches in the world but with recruiting and talent they each won national titles. This place is set up for a natty run every four or five years at least.
2. Mel Tucker is the top target for the LSU job.
Farrell’s Take: FACT. This is what I am hearing. And why wouldn’t he be? He has ties to Nick Saban and Kirby Smart at SEC stops so we know he can recruit and the job he’s done already at Michigan State is amazing.
Some feel he’s the next great coach in college football and he’d be more inexpensive than Jimbo Fisher, James Franklin or others. Tucker would be an amazing fit and you can bet LSU will try to get him.
3. LSU did the right thing parting with Ed Orgeron.
Farrell’s Take: FICTION. I think this is too soon. I doubted the Ed Orgeron hire at first but the 2019 season was amazing. He’s done a very good job managing some difficult situations since. Perhaps some players have checked out on him and maybe that’s the reason but to me you won’t find a hire that will do better.
